How is it that we become possessed?
How is it that we become possessed? If the ghost is someone near to us then we simply allow it in as a close friend, it has the same vibration, we are accustomed to it. With a strange ghost we are immediately alerted, we are instantly on edge, it's a kind of self-defence. If it is our mother, father, someone who has only just died then we are doubly susceptible.
On the one hand we are grieving over someone close to us, on the other - because the vibration is known to us, familiar - we allow the ghost to penetrate. Insofar as a strange ghost has no strong reason to be by us and, after the exorcist's intervention, will leave very swiftly, a "familiar" ghost does not, unfortunately, want to leave so easily.
