Is Death Truly the End?

Understanding Life Through the Lens of Our Final Departure

Almost everyone harbors a fear of death, often perceiving it as the ultimate catastrophe that could befall them. This sentiment largely stems from our profound ignorance regarding death itself. We tend to shun discussions about it, deeming them too morose, or we fool ourselves into thinking it's a distant reality because "we still have plenty of time." Yet, escaping the reality of death is futile; sooner or later, it compels us to confront it head-on. Is death truly the end? We will answer that question in today's post.

The Journey Towards Death Begins at Birth

From the moment of our birth, we embark on a journey towards death. With each day that passes, we edge closer to our demise, growing older. Young people seldom dwell on thoughts of death, buoyed by their vitality and the youthfulness of their bodies, with many ambitions yet to fulfill. However, as years accumulate and we age, the fear of death begins to loom larger. The loss of a parent can starkly remind us that our turn is approaching, instigating fears of having little time left. Our despair following the death of a loved one mirrors our understanding of death: the greater the sorrow and panic, the lesser our grasp of what death entails, and vice versa.

Not comprehending death equates to a lack of understanding of life itself, leading us to squander it on inconsequential matters. Those who heavily identify with their physical bodies, denying the existence of the soul, life after death, or a higher power, are in the worst predicament. Such individuals believe this is their only chance at life, driving them to extract as much as they can from it, relentlessly pursuing money, careers, relationships, cosmetic surgeries, pleasures, and vices. When death's inevitability dawns, the realization that all these pursued treasures must be left behind hits hard. The importance once placed on these pursuits, to the extent of deceit or causing harm to others, fades into worthlessness at death's doorstep, leaving behind nothing but regret for a life that could have been lived differently.

We Are Not Bodies Having a Soul

We must understand that we are not merely bodies that possess a soul; rather, we are souls that have donned physical bodies to engage with and experience the material world. Just as an astronaut requires a spacesuit to venture onto the moon, our souls need a "garment" to exist on Earth. An astronaut does not identify with his suit; likewise, our physical bodies are not who we are. Upon completing his mission, the astronaut returns home and sheds his suit without lament, knowing that his essence persists. Similarly, when we comprehend that we have temporarily clothed ourselves in a physical body for this incarnation, we do not despair at the prospect of departing from it. Instead, we bid it farewell with gratitude and move forward with confidence, knowing our soul never dies. You will always live eternally.

It's beneficial to remind ourselves that one day, this game called "life" will conclude, and we will have to lay aside our physical bodies to ascend to higher planes of existence. Reflect on whether the anger, regret, greed, jealousy, and hatred you harbor are truly worth it. How do you wish to be remembered, or what would you be proud of leaving behind? Pride in acts of vengeance, conflict, stinginess, and offense, or pride in choosing the harder path of love, forgiveness, serenity, and generosity?

Knowledge of Death Diminishes Fear

The more we learn about death, the less we fear it, recognizing the gains it brings for our loved ones or ourselves. A lack of knowledge about death leaves us unprepared for it and uncertain about what comes after. Even after shedding our physical bodies, we remain as "alive" as when we had them, leading some to not even realize they have died. Instead of moving on, they wander among the living, sometimes leading to the possession of living people.
